San Gorgonio boys soccer team beats Riverside Poly in penalty kick shootout – Press Enterprise

SAN BERNARDINO — Championship experience cannot be overstated.

Junior captain Elvin Lopez had two goals – including the equalizer in second-half stoppage time – and scored first in the shootout as the San Gorgonio boys soccer team went on to defeat Riverside Poly 2-2 (4-2 on penalty kicks) Wednesday night in a CIF Southern Section Division 2 first-round playoff game.

“We have so much experience,” Lopez said. “We know how to perform in moments like this.”

Goalkeeper Anthony Solis made two saves in the second half and two more in overtime for San Gorgonio (17-1-7 overall), which CIF Southern Section Division 6 and CIF State Division V regional titles last season.

“We had to find everything that we had inside today,” San Gorgonio coach Adrian Villalobos said. “We knew we weren’t at our best and that somebody was going to have to step up.”

The Spartans claimed another San Andreas League title this season – their third consecutive – and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute Wednesday when Lopez settled a pass and faked a shot before blasting it into the back of the net.

“We knew we have the experience and that we’ve been here before,” Villalobos said.

Riverside Poly (6-7-8), with only one loss on the calendar year, was brimming with confidence early.

The Bears, a 15-win team last season in Rusty Bailey’s first campaign, got on the scoreboard thanks to a defensive mistake from San Gorgonio, with Isaiah Flores getting the goal.

“A bit of bad timing there,” Villalobos said. “(Solis) made the mistake there. He’s always good for one.”

The Ivy League’s third-place finisher, Poly grabbed a lead in the 65th minute when J.J. Joseph finished off a give-and-go with Eric Barbarin.

“We scored the first one and then we dropped off and had to defend a lot,” Lopez said. “We had to change that.”

Poly produced more offense in the second half, outshooting San Gorgonio 5-2 in an effort to hold tight to the lead.

Nearing full time and with San Gorgonio pressuring, the ball was popped up toward the penalty spot for Lopez, who sent a looped header over Poly’s goalkeeper that nicked the underside of the crossbar on its way over the goal line.

“That ball seemed like it was in the air forever,” Villalobos said. “He’s the one went to get the final touch and it worked out.”

After two scoreless 10-minute periods of overtime in the rain, Lopez scored first in the shootout.

Adam Yrungaray sent Poly’s first attempt over the bar, and San Gorgonio led 3-2 after Solis dove to his right to stop the Bears’ fourth kick. Emiliano Inzunza, the Spartans co-captain, stood over the penalty spot and took a deep breath before calmly slotting his shot into the lower left corner to win the match.

San Gorgonio advances to play at Redondo in a second round match on Friday.

ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery team up to launch sports super-streamer – Press Enterprise

Three of the biggest sports broadcasters are uniting to create a super-platform that will house their sports assets under a single streaming roof, a seismic and once-unthinkable move as the industry rapidly transitions away from linear television to streaming services.

Disney’s ESPN, Fox Corporation, and Warner Bros. Discovery (CNN’s parent company) announced Tuesday that they will launch the new service in the fall.

The service, which each company will own one-third of, will offer consumers access to a host of sporting events, including NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and FIFA World Cup games. It will also feature NASCAR races, UFC matches, and PGA Tour Golf tournaments.

The companies did not specify how much a subscription to the forthcoming sports platform will cost or what it will be named. Additional information is expected to be announced closer to launch.

An ESPN spokesperson said that the company plans on launching its own robust direct-to-consumer service. And Warner Bros. Discovery has put its sports offerings on its own platform, Max.

Shares in Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox Corp. were up slightly in after-hours trading following the news. Disney, which reports earnings on Wednesday, saw its stock down about 1%.

The three media companies celebrated the tentative deal to launch the service as a major moment for the industry.

Legacy media companies have been working for years to transition away from relying on the traditional cable bundle and toward profitable streaming services as millions of consumers cut the cord each year, a migration prompted by the rapid rise of Netflix.

After pouring billions of dollars into their own streaming services to compete with Netflix, the leaders of several major media companies — including Bob Iger, chief executive of ESPN-parent Disney, and David Zaslav, chief executive of Warner Bros. Discovery — have recently signaled to consumers to expect more bundling.

The executives are banking on the prospect that by teaming up they can together take on Netflix and major technology companies, such as Amazon and Apple, that have far deeper pockets.

Iger called “the launch of this new streaming sports service” an “important step forward for the media business.” Zaslav said the partnership “exemplifies our ability as an industry to drive innovation.” And Lachlan Murdoch, chief executive of Fox Corporation, said he believed the streamer “will provide passionate fans outside of the traditional bundle an array of amazing sports content.”

Making sports available via a direct-to-consumer product is likely to accelerate the decline of the cable subscription business, given that such live events have long been a pillar of consumer demand holding together the traditional bundle.

But as the cost of sports rights has surged in recent years and the television business has deteriorated with cord-cutting, media executives have hunted for innovative ways to retain their highly valued rights while transitioning to the streaming future.

Discussions about the creation of the sports streaming service, which will have an independent management team, began among the executives involved roughly six months ago.

Notably absent from the partnership was NBCUniversal and Paramount Global, both of which have their own services where sporting events are streamed.

Three battle for 3rd District seat on Riverside County Board of Supervisors – Press Enterprise

Chuck Washington’s winning streak is once again on the line.

The Riverside County supervisor, who served on the Murrieta and Temecula city councils before joining the county’s highest-elected body, has never lost an election. He’ll look to continue that trend as he seeks another four-year term representing the Board of Supervisors’ 3rd District.

Standing in his way are former Cudahy councilmember and 2022 Republican state treasurer candidate Jack Guerrero and former Murrieta councilmember Jonathan Ingram. All three are on the ballot in the March 5 primary election.

Someone will win the seat if he gets 50% plus one of the total vote. Otherwise, the top two vote-getters will face off in the November election.

At stake is one of five nonpartisan seats on the board, which oversees public services for 2.4 million in the nation’s 10th most-populated county, one roughly equal in land area to New Jersey. County government has more than 20,000 employees and a roughly $9 billion budget that’s grown dramatically since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 3rd District represents about 500,000 people in Aguanga, Anza, De Luz, East Hemet, French Valley, Green Acres, Homeland, La Cresta, Lake Riverside, Menifee, Murrieta, Sage, Temecula, Wildomar, Winchester and part of Valle Vista.

Guerrero, who got 41% of the vote statewide — 53% in Riverside County — in his unsuccessful treasurer bid, moved to Temecula in March 2023. The Stanford- and Harvard-educated economist and certified public accountant promises to be an independent and vigilant fiscal watchdog.

It’s a vital role, he said, for a county with a number of flashing financial red lights, from drastically underestimated pension debt to too many half-million dollar-earning executives and a lack of internal controls that open the door for fraud and corruption.

“If we can address those things very efficiently, then we prime the county for great success across all kinds of urgent matters like infrastructure development and accommodating growth and promoting private sector, job growth, et cetera,” Guerrero said.

“All of those things are very important. But we need to find the foundational slate of good government and best practices in the way we organize our county’s affairs.”

Guerrero, who supports a two-term limit for supervisors, also wants county departments to justify every penny they ask for, rather than go into every budget cycle with a certain amount of money already guaranteed to them.

“I also want to focus on election integrity,” he said. “That’s part of this broader environment of internal controls that really matters in the county. Very few people are talking about that and I think that we need to investigate the county’s election process and I will go wherever the evidence and the facts take me.”

Jonathan Ingram

Ingram served on the Murrieta City Council, including a stint as mayor, from 2014 to 2022.

“I am deeply committed to addressing the pressing issues that affect our district,” Ingram, a former county GOP chairman, said via text.

“I firmly believe that by focusing on local well-paying jobs, improving traffic and infrastructure, fostering transparency and addressing homelessness and mental illness, we can create a district where everyone can thrive.”

Ingram said he would “work tirelessly to attract industries that align with our district’s strengths, ensuring that residents have access to fulfilling careers close to home.”

He also wants to reduce traffic congestion by expanding public transportation options and “implementing smart traffic solutions.”

“I am committed to establishing a clear and transparent process that empowers residents and businesses alike,” Ingram said. “Rather than focusing on what people can’t do, I will prioritize informing them about what they can do.”

Ingram also promised to work with law enforcement and mental health professionals “to develop innovative strategies” to deal with crime, mental illness and homelessness.

“By providing adequate resources for mental health services, affordable housing, and supportive programs, we can help individuals overcome their struggles and reduce the correlation between homelessness, mental illness, and crime,” he said.

Chuck Washington

The county’s first Black supervisor, Washington was appointed to his seat in 2015 by then-Gov. Jerry Brown to fill a vacancy. He was elected to a four-year term in 2016 and reelected in 2020.

During his tenure, Washington said the county has balanced its budget, built up its savings, stabilized its pension costs and bolstered spending on public safety, mental health and other services.

“The reality is our budget has grown because revenues have grown,” he said. “Funding from state and federal sources has grown. The county itself has grown in population. We’re serving more people.”

“If that was a warning sign … what you would see increased deficit spending. But actually, what you’re seeing is (a) balanced budget and growing reserves.”

Washington said that, unlike his opponents, he doesn’t need on-the-job training.

“Coming to the county Board of Supervisors (from Temecula), I realized, ‘Wow, I had no idea what counties do. I had no idea what a county supervisor does,” he said. “It’s not just like being a councilman but for more people.”

If reelected, Washington, who would be the board’s senior-most supervisor with Kevin Jeffries not seeking reelection, said he’d work to support social workers “so that we can retain them (and) not overburden them.”

He also wants to reduce the amount of time ambulances spend offloading patients at hospitals. Long waits to offload patients keep ambulances from going back into service.

“I can lead towards the next four years to make sure that we have the right kinds of solutions in place and investing in the services and departments where we get the best return on investment, not just, ‘Oh well, we’ve always just put money into this department,’” Washington said.

ATLANTA — Home or away, there is no slowing Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers right now.

Leonard scored 36 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and the Clippers finished off a long road trip in style with a 149-144 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night.

James Harden had 30 points and 10 assists, and Paul George scored 18 for the Clippers, who went 6-1 on their 13-day Grammy trip and improved to 26-5 since Nov. 30. They won at Miami on Sunday, the front end of this back-to-back.

“To go 6-1 against the caliber of teams we played on this trip, coming into it, we knew tonight was going to be tough,” Coach Tyronn Lue said. “Got down early in the second half, continued to keep fighting. It was a total team effort.”

Trae Young, the Eastern Conference Player of the Week, had 25 points and De’Andre Hunter matched a season-high with 27 off the bench for the Hawks, who had won four in a row.

The Clippers shot 60% from 3-point range, while the Hawks were at 51.3%. The 149 points were the Clippers’ second-most of the season, and they only turned the ball over seven times.

“Taking care of the basketball has always been a big key for us,” Lue said. “We are too good offensively to turn it over. If we get shots up, we’re going to be pretty good.”

Leonard, the Western Conference Player of the Week, keyed an 8-2 burst with less than 2:30 remaining, hitting a 3-pointer, converting a three-point play and assisting on a layup. The run gave the Clippers a 139-130 lead.

After three free throws by Young, Harden banked in a 3-pointer while being fouled and stretched the lead to 142-133 with 1:06 left.

Lue was disappointed that his team permitted 43 points in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve got to get back home and be better (on defense),” he said. “I don’t know if it was fatigue. Guys have played a lot of games, a lot of minutes. I’ll give them a little bit of a break with that, but we have to be better. We had some slippage, so we have to get home and clean this stuff up.”

A back-and-forth third quarter ended with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Clippers center Daniel Theis that gave them a 102-101 edge entering the fourth.

Young tied the score at 66 with a driving basket in the final second of the second period.

Hawks center Clint Capela, who has started 47 games, sat out with a left adductor strain and will be re-evaluated in seven to 10 days.

Clippers starting center Ivica Zubac (right calf strain) remained out after being listed as questionable.

The pursuit began around 10:44 p.m. after officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop for vehicle code violations on a white Nissan Sentra and the driver did not comply, police said in a news release.

The pursuit, which lasted around 20 seconds, reached speeds of over 100 mph and ended after the suspect lost control of the sedan and crashed into a responding police unit’s car on Valley Boulevard and Cypress Avenue.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, police said in the release. Two of the four occupants in the Nissan were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The two officers who were in the police vehicle when it was struck were also hospitalized with serious injuries.

Valley Boulevard, which was closed from Cypress Avenue to Juniper Avenue for the investigation, was reopened as of Sunday afternoon.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s major accident team is handling the investigation. No additional details were available on Sunday.

First Lady speaks at LA gala championing Black brands and designers – Press Enterprise

First Lady Dr. Jill Biden spoke on the importance of supporting Black businesses and entrepreneurship at a star-studded gala at Paramount Studios on Saturday evening.

The event was hosted by the Fifteen Percent Pledge, a nonprofit organization that asks businesses to commit 15 percent of their shelf space to Black-owned brands.

It was attended by some of the biggest names in Black fashion, beauty and entertainment including including actress Tracee Ellis Ross, comedian Robin Theade and designer Emma Grede.

The First Lady and President Joe Biden landed in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon for a brief, one-day trip. She used the gala to highlight the Biden administration’s work to advance economic equity and make it easier for Black companies to receive funding.

Those efforts included doubling the amount of government loans given to Black owned businesses and investing $12 billion in community lenders to expand access to capital for minority owned businesses.

“I want you to know that my husband, President Biden, is your partner, he understands that systemic change requires direct action,” she said.

The First Lady spoke of the powerful reckoning brought on by the murder of George Floyd and the progress made to dismantle institutionalized racism since then. But she said that these advancements are under threat.

“The real work of lasting change lies in the moments when history zags, when progress seems to ebb, when the marchers have all gone home and the spotlight has receded, when the backlash has swelled and opponents are working harder to erase the hard fought gains that we’ve made,” she said. “We can’t let them prevail.”

Aurora James, founder of The Fifteen Pledge, also spoke about attacks on the diversity, equity and inclusion movement.

She launched the nonprofit during the peak of Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. Since then it has directed almost $14 billion worth of revenue to Black owned businesses through partnerships with major brands including Sephora, Nordstrom and Macys.

James pointed to the Supreme Court’s overruling of affirmative action as an example of where progress has been lost.

“There are no longer protections in place to ensure that we have an equal shot at an education, a good job, a bank loan, really anything,” she said. “This campaign is coordinated, it’s premeditated and it’s no coincidence that it’s intensifying at a very, very critical election.”

Both James and Dr. Biden used the evening to call on event attendees — who represent some of the most influential Black voices in America — to help mobilize voters in November.

Capturing the Black vote will be essential for a Biden path to reelection, many experts say.

Biden was backed by 91% of Black voters nationwide in the last general election, according to AP VoteCast. And, it was his success with this community that helped him claim victory in swing states like Southern Carolina, Georgia and Wisconsin.

But there’s no guarantee Black voters will support Biden with the same enthusiasm come November.

Only 50% of Black adults said they approve of Biden in an AP-NORC poll in December, compared to 86% in July 2021.

“I don’t think anyone’s taking anything for granted,” said Democratic strategist Michael Trujillo, referring to the Black vote. “So you roll up your sleeves, you work hard and you earn every vote. You don’t just assume they’re going to come to you.”

The president took advantage of his brief Los Angeles visit to meet with Black entertainment leaders and discuss the important role they have to play in the upcoming election, Deadline reported.

The couple are scheduled to depart the Southland on Sunday afternoon to attend a campaign event in Las Vegas.

The Centennial, Santiago and Chaparral girls water polo teams received the No. 1 seed in their respective divisions as the CIF Southern Section released its pairings for the 2024 playoffs Saturday morning.

Centennial, which shared the Big VIII League championship with King this season, is the No. 1 seed in the Division 3 bracket. The Huskies (26-1) open the postseason at home Tuesday against Glendora (12-12). Centennial is seeking its second section title in three seasons, having won the Division 5 championship in 2022.

Santiago finished third in the Big VIII League standings but still received the No. 1 seed in the Division 4 playoff bracket. The Sharks (18-3) will host Beaumont (16-12) in a first-round match Tuesday.

Chaparral, which finished second to Murrieta Valley in the Southwestern League standings, is the No. 1 seed in the Division 5 bracket. The Pumas (15-4) open at home Tuesday against Diamond Bar (7-13).

Four other Inland girls water polo teams earned a Top 4 seeding in their respective playoffs divisions.

Alta Loma won the Division 4 championship last season and is the No. 2 seed in Division 2 this season after going unbeaten in the Palomares League. The Braves (16-8) host Mira Costa (10-19) in Wednesday’s opening round.

Los Osos, which finished second to Rancho Cucamonga in the Baseline League standings, is the No. 2 seed in the Division 4 bracket. The Grizzlies (20-5) received a first-round bye and will host Santa Ana or Crescenta Valley in a second-round match Wednesday.

Paloma Valley, which won the Sunbelt League championship, is the No. 4 seed in the Division 5 bracket. The Wildcats (21-7) open the postseason at home Tuesday against Montclair (10-15).

Webb finished fourth in the Valle Vista League standings but still received the No. 3 seed in the Division 6 playoff bracket. The Gauls (12-8) will host Tustin (10-10) in a wild-card match Tuesday.

Combat jets have been streaking overhead near March Air Reserve Base this week.

“March Air Reserve Base is hosting a readiness exercise,” March ARB officials posted on Facebook Jan. 26, and the public should expect “an increase in aircraft … noise within the area during the exercise.”

“There are American, British and Canadian forces working alongside each other for this,” Riverside City Councilman Chuck Conder, a retired officer with the US Air Force, told City News Service. “A lot of units are involved, including those based at Nellis Air Force Base, which is home to Red Flag.” Red Flag entails intense air combat training.

The public affairs unit at the base near Riverside said Friday afternoon, Feb. 2, “the exercise happening on the base … is not permanent and will be concluding soon.” Conder said he’d been told it would end Feb. 5.

Combat jet traffic volume increased beginning Jan. 27, with formations of two, four and six planes departing March multiple times daily and sometimes at night. There was a pause Thursday because of weather.

“They chose March as a forward operating base,” Conder said. “It’s just an exercise, a way of getting to know each other, how they work, because they may have to join up some place in the world.”

Conder said he has seen F-16s, F-15s and British Typhoon fighters. “They’re learning how to work together,” he said.

“It’s not just flying.” he said. “They’re learning how to do things in preparation for deployments. They would be responsible for setting up things the forces need across the board. There are many elements within the operation.”
