Today marks the two-week mark of the start of the Google June 2025 core update. This update seems pretty significant thus far, with Google announcing the update on June 30th at about 10:30 am, then the volatility kicking off on July 2nd and seeing some partial recoveries from the helpful content update.

And while we reported on the partial recoveries on July 10th, which started actually around the 7th of July, we are seeing the Google search ranking volatility to continue to stay heated through this weekend.

Plus, we are seeing some of those partial recoveries lead to those sites showing up more often in Google search features like AI Overviews, top stories, gain rich results and many other search features.

Here is some of what I am seeing with the tools and the chatter within the industry from over the weekend.

Google Tracking Tools On June 2025 Core Update

Just look how heated many of the tools have been since Thursday, July 10th:

Semrush:

SEO Chatter

The chatter within the community is heated as well. I know many sites are not seeing any recovery, and many are seeing declines in rankings – but there are some that are seeing some level of recoveries, at least for now, with this update. It may be too early for those sites to celebrate, but it is worth reporting.

I covered a lot of the chatter on this in my story on July 10th but here are some of the newer reports. These are from site owners talking on WebmasterWorld and our site – plus some more from social.

The sites I’m checking and they have had an increase in traffic have also had an increase in keywords positioned in the top positions (Some a major increase). If traffic increases but keywords are stable or decreasing, it is likely to be bot traffic, or maybe aio doesn’t show up or paa has been lowered a few positions or they have removed some YouTube videos, so it’s hard to understand. But there could also be other reasons. My traffic increased a lot bit it’s not Google. We identified some bots, we GeoIP blocked regions. It’s started around 10 days ago, it’s still high but it’s a fight we can’t win as they are too many…Our Google traffic has been volatile in general for a while now. It went up sharply right when the June Core Update was announced, then dipped over the July 4 holiday weekend in the U.S. before starting to climb again yesterday. Today is looking strong, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?Daily unique visits began a notable recovery on July 8. It’s continuing through midday today (Sat.), which does not yet show on the graph.I’m not seeing an improvement with this update. Trends look the same to me. 🤷🏻 Am I the only one?Same, nothing at all. It’s not, actually the same things have been happening since April 2025 for me, when Google started to decimate my site.I’ve seen a 30% recovery with this update so far, but I’m still hoping for a full recovery. I put a lot of work and money into making the site super.Rankings are back to being a mess. Shuffling all over the place. not that it matters. Honestly hard for me to care about a business that is clearly dead.Traffic is better but customers are not yet back…Traffic is awful. Started nosediving on July 7th.This core update has really been a rollercoaster for my news site. At first, everything was going fine, then things took a nosedive, but since Friday, rankings have clearly improved and visitor numbers have shot up.

“Core update notes” cont’d. And here are some of the largest surges I have seen based on running the visibility numbers this AM. Again, there are some huge swings with the June core update so far across verticals. We are nearly two weeks into the update and I’ll be tracking the… pic.twitter.com/uTyPIpLIe0

And just a reminder, AI Overviews are impacted by core updates. We covered it before and now Glenn Gabe is documenting it, showing that this is actually confirmed:

It has now been ten days since the Google June 2025 core update began rolling out. It will probably take another ten or so days to finish rolling out, but we are seeing signs that some sites affected by previous core updates and helpful content updates are experiencing partial recoveries with this latest Google core update.

Just a quick reminder, the Google June 2025 core update started on June 30th at around 10:37 am ET. We didn’t really see much movement until July 2nd. Now that we are into it, I am seeing chatter of partial recoveries.

Glenn Gabe has been sharing charts of some of these recoveries on X. He wrote, “Starting on 7/6 I’m seeing a number of sites impacted by the September HCU(X) surge. It’s early and they are not back to where they were (at least yet)… but a number of them are surging which is great to see.” “I’ve also heard from HCU(X) site owners about rich snippets returning, featured snippets returning, showing up in AIOs, etc. Stay tuned. I’ll have more to share about this soon,” he added.

Here are some of those charts:

Here are some more examples of HCU(X) sites surging with the June core update (starting on about 7/6). I really hope this continues for them. It’s been far too long with no movement. Again, stay tuned. pic.twitter.com/poy3NprVE4

— Glenn Gabe (@glenngabe) July 9, 2025

More about sites impacted by the September 2023 HCU(X) that are surging with the June 2025 core update. Here is a site that finally started surging back. IMO they never should have gotten hit as hard as they did, so this is great to see. Both web search and image search have… pic.twitter.com/PXHMYZMb8I

— Glenn Gabe (@glenngabe) July 10, 2025

This is not to say all sites are recovering, they are not. And there are plenty of examples of sites that lost a ton of visibility in Google Search. But some of the sites hit hard in older Google updates are seeing partial recoveries, likely for the first time.

It is rare to see a site hit by the September helpful content update in 2023 see a recovery, I mean, there were some, on some levels but still rare. Yea, Google said recoveries are possible if they take specific actions.

I should note, the volatility heated up in the past 24-hours as well.

Some folks on WebmasterWorld are also seeing positive signs with this update:

I hesitate as I type this however my traffic yesterday and today seems to be relatively “normal” and especially so for this time of year, fingers crossed. My news page is recovering, Discover traffic is returning, and the ranking has improved overall. So, we’ve made it through the first week, but we still have two weeks of updates to go.Over last 3 days, my main site heavily hit by HCU is making a strong recovery. Interestingly, we haven’t made any changes to it. We did make changes to it after HCU and then reverted it back to how it was pre HCU as it shouldn’t have been penalised in the first place. Only difference is that previously we were running a lot of AdSense on the site and now we’re not. I don’t think that’s what’s helped but hope the trend continues and survives throughout the core update rollout. Let’s see.I finally see specialized sites that are climbing back up in the rankings, sites that were in the first places only because of their name or because ugc are leaving room again for sites that know what they are talking about. However, we are still in the middle of the update and despite the improvement in position it will be difficult due to aio and paa and YouTube and reddit, that traffic increases for all sites that have had an improvement in ranking. AIO in particular is the death of the web.

And then there are some comments on my last post about some recoveries:

I am seeing strong recovery signs. My traffic went up when the update started, but now its back to the same level it was before the update. After five days of semi decent traffic, coincidentally after I wrote my last comment here, back to scraps today. I knew it would happen, just hoped it’d be for a little longer.I been waiting 2+ years for this update, finely it is looking and ranking quality content on small niche sites.I’m 16% up in PV, still 60% down from last yearIt’s a big update! I’m lucky I feel! Got some nice growth in the last 48-72 hours especially, very steady due to some top position improvements, I’m surprised myself! Wishing everyone here UP only if possible!!!

I’m seriously up, like 65-70% up, got 1000s of keywords literally moving nicely up en-masse so is not the case of a few keywords.

I got a boost from Google this morning… But you know, will it last? I’m also seeing positive results, like my rich results are back (from 09/2023) and some things like that…

… and I’m working at my “full human capacity” (literally) this whole time…

Noticed a boost last night but again it’s not up to the mark today – wishing u the beststill going strong 4th day. Fingers crossed for your site(s) too and everyone’s here!!!Too soon to tell yet, but I think that, from Google, I had a partial recovery here. Maybe some 30 to 40%.1. The traffic on my oldest website dropped a few weeks ago, but it’s now recovering and the trend keeps going up.

2. My second website saw a 50% spike in traffic, but then it kept declining. Still, I’m hoping it will end up doing better than before.

3. My newest website has very unstable traffic: sometimes it spikes really high, other times it drops a lot. Keywords disappear and reappear within hours. I honestly don’t know what to do about it.

I had a 40% increase in my visits from Google so far. Now I have something like 55% of the visits I used to have before HCU…

Here are some responses to Glenn’s post on X:

This is the first time in a long time I actually can find some of my blog posts on the first page, although none have regained their original position but I’ll take being ranked at this point

— Samantha Oppenheimer (Sam Opp) (@findlovetravel) July 9, 2025

I also see promising changes, but I don’t want to get my hopes up too high. Some sites have tripled their visitor numbers compared to recent times. And indeed, this has been the case since July 6.

— Mark (@kwebeman) July 9, 2025

Right? Same on our end. We also made changes tho that correlate to time of update. Anyhow, glad you’re seeing the same thing that we’re seeing with https://t.co/ulxpCuZDAs and that Lily is seeing with her tracking. 👏🏻🤞🏻

This week, we finally had an official Google update, the June 2025 core update, which seemed to have kicked in on July 2nd. We also had an unconfirmed update on June 28th, days before the core update was announced. Google Search Console updated its Insights report. Google promoted AI Mode with an animated not Google Doodle. Google is testing AI Mode in Chrome. A study from Similarweb shows that clicks from Google dropped 13 percentage points since the launch of AI Overviews a year ago. I posted the monthly Google webmaster report. Bing placed the Copilot Search tab at the beginning of all tabs. Google Ads has a new broad match experiment testing. Google Ads AI Max is a search match type. Microsoft removed over one billion ads and 475,000 advertiser accounts. Microsoft Advertising will do away with TCPA and TROAS. Google AdSense will fill empty in page ads with contextual relevant suggestions, by default, in 30 days. Microsoft is laying off 9,000 jobs. And Cloudflare announced it will block AI crawlers by default and offer a Pay Per Crawl initiative. That was the search news this week at the Search Engine Roundtable.

Google announced the release of the June 2025 core update on June 30th at around 10:37 am ET. It seems as of July 2nd, we are starting to see the first signs of it actually starting to cause ranking volatility. It is early and I suspect you will all see this more visibly in the next day or so, but it does seem the core update ranking fluctuations have begun.

Most core updates are not felt the day it is announced but they are felt within the first few days. And most SEOs don’t seem to be seeing the impact of this core update yet, but the tools are 100% picking up on it.

Glenn Gabe picked up on the changes early and posted on X, and some SEOs did notice some fluctuations. I’ll sum it all up below.

Google said this core update will take three weeks to roll out, not the typical two weeks rollout timeframe. So again, if you are not seeing anything yet, you might soon. Plus, there are many seeing the volatility from the Saturday update – but that would not be related to this core update – so be careful when looking at your data.

So what are we seeing?

Google Tracking Tools On June 2025 Core Update

Some of the tools are already picking up on the core update volatility as of this morning. Not all of the tools but some. So if you are using any of these tools, you can probably dig into your specific site with that tool and see what volatility you are experiencing with your specific site.

SEO Chatter on the June 2025 Core Update

Glenn Gabe spotted the ranking volatility early and posted about it on X – he wrote, “I’m seeing surges and drops beginning based on running the visibility reporting for ~4K sites across verticals this morning (and digging into the largest surges/drops). I am also seeing movement for several clients that I can already see changes in their reporting…”

He added:

I’m also seeing some sites bounce back with the update after dropping with the recent volatility I covered yesterday (and over the past few weeks). On that note, Google has been clear that core updates start when they announce the update and not prior to that. Anything prior would be something else they pushed, which they can do (including updating specific core systems). Personally, I think we might have seen a reviews update over the past week or so… I saw a number of sites previously impacted by reviews updates drop or surge.

Back to the core update. I think we’ll see much more movement by tomorrow and Friday. Stay tuned.

Here is what he shared:

Good Morning Google Land! This is the July 2nd edition of “Core Update Notes”. It looks like the update is just starting to land… I’m seeing surges and drops beginning based on running the visibility reporting for ~4K sites across verticals this morning (and digging into the… pic.twitter.com/aV98simA0G

— Glenn Gabe (@glenngabe) July 2, 2025

The forums and chatter are generally pretty slow but here is what I found on this site, on WebmasterWorld and on social media:

Traffic on one of my newest websites. The number of visits from Google speaks for itself. Google = Evil, lolToday traffic is -30%. remaining traffic is 100% zombies.

This must be 100% a serps quality update for poeple to find 100% what they are looking for.

My traffic continues its downward SLOPE trend day by day, slow and steady from 5k clicks before AIO (AIO stands for Artificial *Infringement* Overviews right?) to 500 ish, impressions and positions remain unchanged just the decouple in effect! This update is really a total scam.

On the first day it was rolled out, I noticed my SERP rankings (still have 2 weeks before my subscription ends) shows that I dropped for quite a number of keywords.

The second day (yesterday), they went back to its position.

Today, some of the keywords went up a bit… But none of them went to the first page at all. Then after I refresh to check the SERP rankings again, they’re now all down again.

Since the start of the update traffic has died. News does not get visibility in either Discover or search. Something similar happened throughout June, but now it has become even worse!Same, my website deleted from Discover and News. Traffic – 0.I’m in the same boat: traffic has dropped on my sites. And then I find one of my articles copied 1:1 by Google’s AI search, which is a clear copyright violation. But as a small publisher, you know there’s nothing you can really do about it. I’m honestly fed up today …

Many sites are up 40 to 50% compared to last week.

— Mark (@kwebeman) July 2, 2025

MY WEBSITE RANKS GOES DOWN FROM FIRST PAGE TO SECOND PAGE AND THIRD PAGE

— Sanket (@mastersanket) July 2, 2025

There’s been a slight improvement in keyword rankings and website traffic 🤗🤗 It’s a bit late to decide, but let’s see if this positive trend continues over the next few days.

PS: Here are screenshots of the websites of four different clients of mine 👇🏻👇🏻 pic.twitter.com/rA9w7L9KWb

— SEO Gҽҽƙ🗿 🆇 (@spseotweets) July 2, 2025

Yes, the HCU-hit site seems a bit positive, and the new site that was growing before the update is also doing well, but it’s too early to say anything definitive.

— Deepak Yadav (@deepaksgt) July 2, 2025

Yes, overall most sites seem to be up, but there’s one that’s showing a slight dip.

— Param Chahal (@ParamChahals) July 2, 2025

But it is super early, and I suspect throughout today and by tomorrow, more of you should notice changes on some of the sites you manage.

Google has relaunched its Search Console Insights as a standalone tab and report within the main Google Search Console tool. Previously, Search Console Insights was its own sub-reporting tool and now, it is part of the main Search Console site.

Google wrote that Search Console Insights has been “integrated directly into the main Search Console interface, replacing the current standalone beta experience.” I see this report now but Google said if you don’t, don’t worry, it is rolling out “over the coming weeks.”

“The report offers a more cohesive experience, bringing valuable insights closer to the full suite of tools available in Search Console,” Google added.

Google first rolled out Search Console Insights as a beta in June 2020 and then in June 2021 rolled it out to everyone. Then last December, Google removed the Google Analytics data from Search Console Insights.

Here is where the new tab is:

Here are some of the revised reports that “offers even more insights and a deeper integration with Search Console’s Performance report. With this change, we aim to streamline your workflow, make it easier to find opportunities to improve your site’s performance, and provide more ways to explore specific areas of interest,” Google wrote:

The report is based on performance metrics from Google’s Web Search results, and organized into the following cards:

Clicks and impressions: How often your site was clicked by users and how many times it appeared in Search results during the selected period. Monitor how often your site appears in Search and how effectively your content leads to clicks.

Your content: How your content (pages/URLs) performed in Search during the selected period, categorized as top, trending up, and trending down. See which pages resonate most with your audience and identify opportunities to grow or improve your content.

Queries leading to your site: How different search terms (queries) that led to your site performed during the selected period, categorized as top, trending up, and trending down. See the exact search terms your audience uses to find your content and identify opportunities for new or improved content.

Top countries: The location of users who clicked your site in Search results during the selected period. This helps you understand your primary geographic audiences and how to better serve them with tailored content.

Additional traffic sources: Clicks your site received from sources other than Google’s Web Search results. This could include Image search, Video search, News search, and Discover. These are distinct from your Google Web Search results. Learn how users are finding your content beyond traditional web search and how to optimize for these diverse platforms.

For more details, check out this help document.

Yea, all this time invested into these reports but they don’t give us data on AI Overviews or AI Mode. 🙁

Google officially announced the rollout of the June 2025 core update yesterday at around 10:37 am ET. This core update is expected to take about three weeks to roll out. Google said this “is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites.”

Most core updates take about two weeks to roll out but Google has had core updates that take one week, had that take three weeks and had that take over four weeks. The following morning, I am not seeing huge signs that this has rolled out in an impactful way – but don’t get your hopes up, we might see the larger impact this update tomorrow or in the coming days. But so far, the morning after, it is not that impactful. I will continue to track this update and update you on any changes as it rolls out over the next few weeks.

Today we released the June 2025 core update. We’ll update our ranking release history page when the rollout is complete: https://t.co/bOclYyVtYH

— Google Search Central (@googlesearchc) June 30, 2025

This one does not mention “work to surface more content from creators through a series of improvements throughout this year” like they mentioned in the March 2025 core update. I should note that whatever happened this past Saturday was big but I highly doubt Google would say it is related to this June 2025 core update.

I am surprised this is the second core update we had of 2025, I was expecting more core updates, more often but that did not happen…

Google June 2025 Core Update Quick Facts

Here are the most important things that we know right now in short form:

Name: Google June 2025 Broad Core Update

Launched: June 30, 2025 at around 10:37 am ET

Rollout: Will take about three weeks to roll out

Targets: It looks at all types of content

Penalty: It is not a penalty, it promotes or rewards great web pages

Global: This is a global update impacting all regions, in all languages.

Impact: The normal core update – updating some of the “core systems”. Google said this June update is a “regular update.”

Discover: Core updates impact Google Discover and other features, also feature snippets and more.

Recover: If you were hit by this, then you will need to look at your content and see if you can do better with Google’s core update advice.

Refreshes: Google will do periodic refreshes to this algorithm but may not communicate those updates in the future. Maybe this is what we saw the past couple of weeks or all those unconfirmed Google updates.

Google June 2025 Core Update Details

There doesn’t seem much unique to this update outside of it taking three weeks, versus the typical two weeks.

And also this line, “This is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites.” That line makes it sound not super unique and just a normal core update.

John Mueller from Google said this is a “bigger Google Search updates,” I mean, all core updates are, but he said this on Bluesky.

June 2025 Google Core Update Video

Here is a short video I made on this core update – it is super YouTube style:

Previous Helpful Content Update Impact

Here is the list of the previous Google helpful content updates:

Recent Unconfirmed Google Updates

While we didn’t see more core updates, more often, we did have a lot of unconfirmed updates including a big one this Saturday, June 28th. Then before that June 25 and 26th, then June 18th and then June 9th and then June 4th, May 29th, May 21st, May 16th, then May 12 and 13, May 8th (I didn’t cover May 1st, I probably should have) but then it was a couple of weeks, not since April 25th and then before that, 22nd and 23rd volatility and then around April 16th and then before that around April 9th.

SEO Chatter on the June 2025 Core Update

Here is some of the early chatter, just keep in mind, folks think that it started with the Saturday update but I suspect Google would deny that. Overall the chatter is not at core update levels – at least not yet. It is still early. Over on WebmasterWorld, Black Hat World and this site – here is what I am hearing:

Wow, they announce an ”update” now? One could argue that there has been something happening every day since end of May. So, from the looks of things, the entirety of both June and July are screwed. Nice work G.

Would be nice if this announcement was a late one regarding June. Not going into July.

So far my traffic has been improving nicely. Waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was out of the country for 6 weeks and didnt pay attention to my site, didnt look at analytics or SEM or ranking. Gosh that was nice.

We are clearly in recession here in USA, despite the surging (manipulated) stock market. I haven’t seen a single customer since the 24th and my vendors are also reporting that business is stone dead. We know who to thank for that…

Here we go. I was surprised they announced this as I thought they had gone silent on the core updates. Good luck, everyone. What I notice is a lot of video shorts pushed into the search results with this update, and a slight shuffle which interestingly brought back a tiny bit from some sites I knew in the old days on some topics. This ain’t going to help me anyway. Business is dead already. I am just thinking how to make money other ways. maybe I will do AI slop like everyone else. Though I am sure at some point they will tag that as spam too!Noticed slight drops on some affiliate pages. Looks like topical relevance and fresh content are key in this update. Monitoring further. It’s still early, but I’ve noticed slight fluctuations in rankings for some high-competition keywords – mostly in industries with E-E-A-T emphasis.

If you’ve been focusing on quality content, good backlinks, and user experience, you should be fine. Core updates usually reward sites that align with Google’s guidelines. Keep monitoring and adjust if needed.

Noticed a 20% traffic drop on one of my authority sites. Waiting for the dust to settle. We are seeing a little drop in traffic but a huge drop in conversions. That is something that is now common within updates. Conversions vanish directly with the start and bots from all over the world eating up our server power.I’m only seeing this in three niches at the moment, so it’s probably just a coincidence. However, I’ve just noticed that many of the URLs listed by Google lead to 404 pages. However, since the update has only just started (Friday), everything is constantly changing at the moment.

Interesting, “The rollout may take up to 3 weeks to roll out…” Usually it’s two. Maybe we can find out why. 🙂 pic.twitter.com/GkyLMtSC3k

Finally.. @seroundtable readers already knew that 🤝

— Metehan Yesilyurt (@metehan777) June 30, 2025

— Lou Martin (@MissLouMae) June 30, 2025

Been waiting to see when Google would stick the knife in for the final blow… 😆

Good luck all. https://t.co/JWG0xmkMe3

So what are you all seeing with this update so far?

OpenAI quietly updated ChatGPT search to improve search query understanding, provide more comprehensive answers, and better handle longer dialogs.

What Changed In ChatGPT Search?

OpenAI noted multiple improvements but they didn’t provide details about what actually changed. The OpenAI changelogs only noted changes in two areas:

Improved quality

Improved search capability and instruction following

The changelog explains:

“Improved quality

Smarter responses that are more intelligent, are better at understanding what you’re asking, and provide more comprehensive answers.

Handles longer conversational contexts, allowing better intelligence in longer conversations.

Improved search capability and instruction following

More robust ability to follow instructions, especially in longer conversations, significantly reducing repetitive responses.

Capability to run multiple searches automatically for complex or difficult questions.

Search the web using an image you’ve uploaded.”

The changelog also notes that ChatGPT search may take longer and that “chain of thought” reasoning text might show up unexpectedly.
