Today marks the two-week mark of the start of the Google June 2025 core update. This update seems pretty significant thus far, with Google announcing the update on June 30th at about 10:30 am, then the volatility kicking off on July 2nd and seeing some partial recoveries from the helpful content update.

And while we reported on the partial recoveries on July 10th, which started actually around the 7th of July, we are seeing the Google search ranking volatility to continue to stay heated through this weekend.

Plus, we are seeing some of those partial recoveries lead to those sites showing up more often in Google search features like AI Overviews, top stories, gain rich results and many other search features.

Here is some of what I am seeing with the tools and the chatter within the industry from over the weekend.

Google Tracking Tools On June 2025 Core Update

Just look how heated many of the tools have been since Thursday, July 10th:

Semrush:

SEO Chatter

The chatter within the community is heated as well. I know many sites are not seeing any recovery, and many are seeing declines in rankings – but there are some that are seeing some level of recoveries, at least for now, with this update. It may be too early for those sites to celebrate, but it is worth reporting.

I covered a lot of the chatter on this in my story on July 10th but here are some of the newer reports. These are from site owners talking on WebmasterWorld and our site – plus some more from social.

The sites I’m checking and they have had an increase in traffic have also had an increase in keywords positioned in the top positions (Some a major increase). If traffic increases but keywords are stable or decreasing, it is likely to be bot traffic, or maybe aio doesn’t show up or paa has been lowered a few positions or they have removed some YouTube videos, so it’s hard to understand. But there could also be other reasons. My traffic increased a lot bit it’s not Google. We identified some bots, we GeoIP blocked regions. It’s started around 10 days ago, it’s still high but it’s a fight we can’t win as they are too many…Our Google traffic has been volatile in general for a while now. It went up sharply right when the June Core Update was announced, then dipped over the July 4 holiday weekend in the U.S. before starting to climb again yesterday. Today is looking strong, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?Daily unique visits began a notable recovery on July 8. It’s continuing through midday today (Sat.), which does not yet show on the graph.I’m not seeing an improvement with this update. Trends look the same to me. 🤷🏻 Am I the only one?Same, nothing at all. It’s not, actually the same things have been happening since April 2025 for me, when Google started to decimate my site.I’ve seen a 30% recovery with this update so far, but I’m still hoping for a full recovery. I put a lot of work and money into making the site super.Rankings are back to being a mess. Shuffling all over the place. not that it matters. Honestly hard for me to care about a business that is clearly dead.Traffic is better but customers are not yet back…Traffic is awful. Started nosediving on July 7th.This core update has really been a rollercoaster for my news site. At first, everything was going fine, then things took a nosedive, but since Friday, rankings have clearly improved and visitor numbers have shot up.

“Core update notes” cont’d. And here are some of the largest surges I have seen based on running the visibility numbers this AM. Again, there are some huge swings with the June core update so far across verticals. We are nearly two weeks into the update and I’ll be tracking the… pic.twitter.com/uTyPIpLIe0

And just a reminder, AI Overviews are impacted by core updates. We covered it before and now Glenn Gabe is documenting it, showing that this is actually confirmed:

This week, we finally had an official Google update, the June 2025 core update, which seemed to have kicked in on July 2nd. We also had an unconfirmed update on June 28th, days before the core update was announced. Google Search Console updated its Insights report. Google promoted AI Mode with an animated not Google Doodle. Google is testing AI Mode in Chrome. A study from Similarweb shows that clicks from Google dropped 13 percentage points since the launch of AI Overviews a year ago. I posted the monthly Google webmaster report. Bing placed the Copilot Search tab at the beginning of all tabs. Google Ads has a new broad match experiment testing. Google Ads AI Max is a search match type. Microsoft removed over one billion ads and 475,000 advertiser accounts. Microsoft Advertising will do away with TCPA and TROAS. Google AdSense will fill empty in page ads with contextual relevant suggestions, by default, in 30 days. Microsoft is laying off 9,000 jobs. And Cloudflare announced it will block AI crawlers by default and offer a Pay Per Crawl initiative. That was the search news this week at the Search Engine Roundtable.

Google announced the release of the June 2025 core update on June 30th at around 10:37 am ET. It seems as of July 2nd, we are starting to see the first signs of it actually starting to cause ranking volatility. It is early and I suspect you will all see this more visibly in the next day or so, but it does seem the core update ranking fluctuations have begun.

Most core updates are not felt the day it is announced but they are felt within the first few days. And most SEOs don’t seem to be seeing the impact of this core update yet, but the tools are 100% picking up on it.

Glenn Gabe picked up on the changes early and posted on X, and some SEOs did notice some fluctuations. I’ll sum it all up below.

Google said this core update will take three weeks to roll out, not the typical two weeks rollout timeframe. So again, if you are not seeing anything yet, you might soon. Plus, there are many seeing the volatility from the Saturday update – but that would not be related to this core update – so be careful when looking at your data.

So what are we seeing?

Google Tracking Tools On June 2025 Core Update

Some of the tools are already picking up on the core update volatility as of this morning. Not all of the tools but some. So if you are using any of these tools, you can probably dig into your specific site with that tool and see what volatility you are experiencing with your specific site.

SEO Chatter on the June 2025 Core Update

Glenn Gabe spotted the ranking volatility early and posted about it on X – he wrote, “I’m seeing surges and drops beginning based on running the visibility reporting for ~4K sites across verticals this morning (and digging into the largest surges/drops). I am also seeing movement for several clients that I can already see changes in their reporting…”

He added:

I’m also seeing some sites bounce back with the update after dropping with the recent volatility I covered yesterday (and over the past few weeks). On that note, Google has been clear that core updates start when they announce the update and not prior to that. Anything prior would be something else they pushed, which they can do (including updating specific core systems). Personally, I think we might have seen a reviews update over the past week or so… I saw a number of sites previously impacted by reviews updates drop or surge.

Back to the core update. I think we’ll see much more movement by tomorrow and Friday. Stay tuned.

Here is what he shared:

Good Morning Google Land! This is the July 2nd edition of “Core Update Notes”. It looks like the update is just starting to land… I’m seeing surges and drops beginning based on running the visibility reporting for ~4K sites across verticals this morning (and digging into the… pic.twitter.com/aV98simA0G

— Glenn Gabe (@glenngabe) July 2, 2025

The forums and chatter are generally pretty slow but here is what I found on this site, on WebmasterWorld and on social media:

Traffic on one of my newest websites. The number of visits from Google speaks for itself. Google = Evil, lolToday traffic is -30%. remaining traffic is 100% zombies.

This must be 100% a serps quality update for poeple to find 100% what they are looking for.

My traffic continues its downward SLOPE trend day by day, slow and steady from 5k clicks before AIO (AIO stands for Artificial *Infringement* Overviews right?) to 500 ish, impressions and positions remain unchanged just the decouple in effect! This update is really a total scam.

On the first day it was rolled out, I noticed my SERP rankings (still have 2 weeks before my subscription ends) shows that I dropped for quite a number of keywords.

The second day (yesterday), they went back to its position.

Today, some of the keywords went up a bit… But none of them went to the first page at all. Then after I refresh to check the SERP rankings again, they’re now all down again.

Since the start of the update traffic has died. News does not get visibility in either Discover or search. Something similar happened throughout June, but now it has become even worse!Same, my website deleted from Discover and News. Traffic – 0.I’m in the same boat: traffic has dropped on my sites. And then I find one of my articles copied 1:1 by Google’s AI search, which is a clear copyright violation. But as a small publisher, you know there’s nothing you can really do about it. I’m honestly fed up today …

On Saturday, June 28th, it appears that another significant Google Search ranking update occurred, although Google has not confirmed it. There has been significant search ranking volatility and chatter within the SEO industry over the past 24 hours or so.

Again, we haven’t had a confirmed Google search ranking update since the March 2025 core update, we have had tons of unconfirmed updates since then.

As a reminder, the last time we reported on an update was June 25 and 26th, then June 18th and then June 9th and then June 4th, May 29th, May 21st, May 16th, then May 12 and 13, May 8th (I didn’t cover May 1st, I probably should have) but then it was a couple of weeks, not since April 25th and then before that, 22nd and 23rd volatility and then around April 16th and then before that around April 9th. We have yet to have second official update in 2025, we had the March 2025 core update but no other official update in 2025 – yet. I guess Google fibbed about more core updates, more often?

SEO Chatter

Here is some of the chatter from within the SEO community over the past couple of days, including at WebmasterWorld and over on this site:

Hey, is it just me, or is Google’s ranking system completely out of control right now? The ranking of my news site changes by the hour, traffic spikes until Monday, then drops off a cliff. Today? Zero. Sometimes a category is really popular, and then it gets ignored for days. It’s impossible to keep track of it all.Google is doing some sort of update. Each time they are updating/tuning something, the crawl rate drops noticeably. There are some major changes happening at the moment, so it’s no wonder that my traffic has plummeted. This week USA traffic to my global site is down 33% but USA bots are still rampaging however I have managed to block one significant culprit from NYC.My site has dropped to the second page, and even some pages that were ranking in the zero position have fallen, despite not using any black or grey hat SEO techniques. We used to have drops in traffic when volatility rise. Not volatility is calmer and traffic is dying.

This one feels like a bigger one, but what are you all seeing?

SEO Chatter

Here is some of the SEO chatter from WebmasterWorld and comments on this site:

Something is going on again. Not sure if it already started yesterday (June 24th) or today (June 25th)Same awful traffic todayToday traffic very low. I see tech, news websites is rising.Has the USA been blown up today? Seen 0/1 USA visitors today so far in analytics every time I check, normally 80/90 per 30 mins! Funny I got all pages to display fireworks in lighthouse last week and CWV 100% on webmaster tools, (all I needed to do was remove adsense) but I seem to have been penalised since massively.I don’t know what’s happened but Economic Times has been scraping all our articles for about 2-3 years now. Earlier this year, we lost our top spots to them.

I believe there would have been more chatter if Semrush didn’t have a hiccup.

This week we covered the ongoing Google search ranking volatility. Google is now officially counting AI Mode in Google Search Console’s performance reports, but good luck understanding it. Google is testing Audio Overviews in Google Search. Google AI Mode is now within people also ask and Chrome. Google rolled out the Search Live feature in labs but it is audio only. Google added troubleshooting details to its help document on how to block your content from showing in AI features. Some of Google’s knowledge panels are taking you to the wrong site. Longer-lasting and larger SEO issues can take Google longer to process and can take quite some time, John Mueller of Google said. Google is investigating concerns with pages being translated when clicked from the search results. Google’s John Mueller said no AI system currently uses the LLMs.txt. Google Ads is testing a horizontal line filled halfway. Google Ads is testing a new chart interface. Google Ads has new step-by-step conversion setup process. Google Merchant Center now has website-reported autofeeds to streamline inventory flow. Google Merchant Center also updated some of its interface. Google Local Service Ads is testing a background checked label. Google Business Profiles has a new Google Posts interface. Google is testing swapping the site name and URL in the snippet. Bing is testing dropping Microsoft’s name and logo from the search bar. OpenAI released a search quality update for ChatGPT. That was the search news this week at the Search Engine Roundtable.

It’s been almost ten days since I last reported on a Google search ranking update. Well, I had to stop the streak and cover what I’ve seen over the last 24 hours or so. It appears that the volatility in ranking positions in Google search results is shifting more than the norm.

The third-party tracking tools are showing a large spike in volatility from the past day or so, at least most of them. And while the SEO community is dead tired of talking about volatility, espesially without seeing clicks from Google search, there is some chatter throughout the industry about movement.

As a reminder, the last time we reported on June 9th and then June 4th, May 29th, May 21st, May 16th, then May 12 and 13, May 8th (I didn’t cover May 1st, I probably should have) but then it was a couple of weeks, not since April 25th and then before that, 22nd and 23rd volatility and then around April 16th and then before that around April 9th.
SEO Chatter

Here is some of the SEO chatter from WebmasterWorld and comments on this site:

It’s fun again. Google downgraded my news page on Friday. Suddenly, there’s no news traffic anymore. The ranking is rising, but normal searches bring just as many clicks as Bing, which is to say virtually none. But at least AI spam and articles that are actually advertisements are displayed as prominently as possible.

And as if that weren’t enough, the shop was also downgraded. The result: despite AdWords and high spending, there have been no sales via Google traffic since Friday.

Funnily enough, after several weeks of downhill traffic. Seems we are now increasing again. But are still -15% over last month. Granted this fall might not be 100% Google this time. I was meddling with the UI. So won’t play the blame game this time around.Google has boosted Reddit so much while ignoring other sites that, eventually, people will just go directly to Reddit and bypass Google. Every search I do, Google either lists mostly Reddit links or suggests more results from Reddit. At this rate, Reddit will survive, and Google Search may become irrelevant. Just look at Reddit’s stock performance compared to Google’s lately.A website affected by hcu that I observe, for 6 months has started publishing 50 news stories a day, previously it only dealt with guides on technology. The news appeared on Google news but nothing, the traffic remained low and now the site is stopped abandoned. He wanted to give it a try but he just wasted time and money. Better to cut with the past and devote yourself to social networks in my opinion, much less restrictive, a video is published on multiple platforms without problems, you can ask for money for sponsorships that no one says anything, AI content is not a problem for anyone. The social network could be the new opportunity, while continuing on websites only increases the frustration because the traffic of the past will no longer be there because of AIO and all the mess it has combined Google. Better to devote yourself to something else, even if it means starting over. At the moment my goal is 10000 followersLast 7 days zombies increased 70% AI overviews also raise no click expectations to shoppers! It is very confusing for searchers they will naturally stop clicking on ads as well!Today very bad… But my competitor is going up. Discover traffic nonsense, he have 350 000 daily users. My website have 50 000 daily users.

Google Search ranking volatility is heating up today, June 4th. Many of the tools and some of the chatter within the SEO community are showing signs of a Google ranking update of some sorts. Again, Google has not confirmed an update since the March 2025 core update but we’ve seen volatility since then almost every week.

This one is a bit unusual in that it happened a bit earlier on within the week, on a Wednesday. Whereas most of the Google search ranking update stories we’ve covered recently were more on Fridays.

The last time we reported on Google ranking updates were a number of unconfirmed updated, including May 29th, May 21st, May 16th, then May 12 and 13, May 8th (I didn’t cover May 1st, I probably should have) but then it was a couple of weeks, not since April 25th and then before that, 22nd and 23rd volatility and then around April 16th and then before that around April 9th. We have yet to have second official update in 2025, we had the March 2025 core update but no other official update in 2025 – yet.

So here is what we are seeing with this latest Google Search ranking volatility:

Google Tracking Tools

Here is what the third party tracking tools are showing over the past 24 hours – expect the tools that are calm in the report below will be heated tomorrow:

SEO Chatter

Here is the chatter within the SEO community at WebmasterWorld:

Very, very bad traffic from Google since two days.

And we see multiple views from different ips for the one item in a row ( like 5 views within 10 seconds ). That is a clear sign of an updated is going on.

Zombies have been described as copies of previous humans behaviour on your website and if you use hotjar to replay their journey these also make mistakes like getting to a page not linked and other things but these are close to perfect!

One thing for sure is that Amazon does not get zombies while eBay might! Ebay prices are probably better and traffic should convert there!

Organic traffic has been really bad for us, and it’s because of AI. We lost about one third from our peaks last year, and seem to be locked in a slow but steady downward trend. You’re right, according to Semrush there is a lot of movement, and the last time we had strong fluctuations was on May 29th Google is doing a lot of updates at the moment ..

What are you all noticing?

This week, we covered more Google Search ranking volatility around May 29th. Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, said web publishing is not dead and had a great interview with The Verge. Most SEOs are scared of AI Mode in Google Search. Google AI Mode data is coming to Search Console. Google AI Overviews test query expansion feature. Google Ads has new help documents on AI Overviews and AI experiences. Google Ads can show above/below, or within AI Overviews, but not both at the same time. Google Ads replaced Search Max with AI Max in the Google Ads interface. Some are seeing the new channel reporting for performance max campaigns in the wild. SEOs are complaining about the live broadcasting schema and the Indexing API. Google warns about using the Indexing API for unsupported content. Google is moving notifications to the new Google Merchant Center Next on June 25th. Google updated how it shows questions and answers in the local panel. Google Shopping tests a new sub-menu with the super G logo. Bing is testing a sticky footer for related searches. That was the search news this week at the Search Engine Roundtable.

Google Search ranking and results have experienced increased volatility over the past 24 hours or so – the search results are heating up. I am noticing an uptick in SEO chatter within the industry and also some of the tools are showing increased search ranking volatility.

Can Google be prepping to push a new Google search ranking update – I mean, we’ve been expecting more updates, more often but honestly, we have seen less.

It also seems like most of these unconfirmed updates are happening around Thursday on the week, with some outliers. The last time we reported on Google ranking updates were a number of unconfirmed updated, including May 21st, May 16th, then May 12 and 13, May 8th (I didn’t cover May 1st, I probably should have) but then it was a couple of weeks, not since April 25th and then before that, 22nd and 23rd volatility and then around April 16th and then before that around April 9th. We have yet to have second official update in 2025, we had the March 2025 core update but no other official update in 2025 – yet.

So here is what we are seeing with this latest Google Search ranking volatility:

Google Tracking Tools

Here is what the third party tracking tools are showing over the past 24 hours, I suspect we will see them get even more extreme tomorrow:

Semrush:

SEO Chatter

There is also a lot of chatter within the SEO community, both on this site and on WebmasterWorld. Here is some of that chatter:

Site traffic remains anemic — mostly single-page zombies and casual browsers who likely arrived by mistake. Adwords performance hasn’t been any better.Incredibly poor traffic yesterday from everywhere…search traffic was down 23%. It almost seemed as if there was an outage, but i guess just more tinkering and almost daily updates…Yes, since yesterday traffic is worse again. Again we are seeing short to long times where no user comes from Google. It seems like a role back to rubbish SERPs.Traffic is increasing here, record highs almost every day. Search terms in Google Analytics show increases every day, so it looks positive for the future. CPM is down a bit in the last week. Don’t panic, it will probably change over time. For my global sites this past week has seen a 40% reduction in traffic therefore most likely on Sunday 1st June these sites will solely have a splash contact information page. For my widgets G / search / enquiry generation has altered massively, the first 20 years were very beneficial to us. Since about 2010/12 G ‘s manipulation began in earnest and by 2015 it was only going one way and that has been downwards. This week has been terrible. The shop is dead again. Since Monday, Google traffic has been practically zero, and sales have plummeted accordingly. Even AdWords is hardly bringing in anything. Overall, it’s been a terrible month for the shop. As Martin already said, the times of day when no one comes to the website via Google are increasing. It’s freaking bad todayFinal, my website traffic is down. Now is very bad, worst ever. 15 years go to toilet.Today traffic dropped more than 50% with no reason. The past days were fine, but now we struggle.Today and yesterday we are about 20 % lower in compare to our standard traffic. It is quite better than during last 4 weeks, but still not good numbers as we wanted. What is interesting, this traffic drop is ONLY from Discover, Search is with no hit (luckily) 🙂

So what are you all seeing?
