HONOLULU — Balanced offense and stifling defense was a winning formula for the UC Irvine men’s basketball team in a 60-50 victory over Hawaii on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Pierre Crockrell II scored a season-high 16 points on 8-for-15 shooting while dishing out three assists for the Anteaters (12-5 overall, 5-0 Big West), who remained atop the conference standings. Justin Hohn and Carter Welling (5 for 5 from the floor) added 12 points each, and Andre Henry had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
UCI held the top 3-point shooting team in the conference to 3 for 17 (17.6%) from behind the arc and 36.8% overall. The Rainbow Warriors (9-7, 1-3) also struggled from the free-throw line (5 for 13).
Bernardo da Silva led Hawaii with 17 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots. Juan Muñoz added nine points and two steals, and Justin McKoy contributed eight points and seven rebounds.
UCI led by as much as 15 in the first half thanks to a 20-3 run and the Anteaters still led by 13 at halftime (33-20).
The teams traded surges to begin the second half, and Hawaii got within 48-45 on a Muñoz 3-pointer with nine minutes left. Carter Welling helped restore order with a layup and then a two-handed dunk before a pair of Hohn free throws made it 54-45. Crockrell added a trio of jumpers for a 60-46 lead with 1:52 left and UCI closed out the win.
Hawaii’s point total was the lowest for a UCI opponent this season.

After a week off, UCI will resume Big West play at home against UC San Diego next Thursday (Jan. 18) at 7 p.m.
