RIVERSIDE — After a game-ending injury to their quarterback, North (1-2) couldn’t keep possession or contain the dual quarterback system of Chino Hills (2-1), falling 36-3
Following a 16-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter from Chino Hills senior quarterback Nolan Ellison, North threatened to start the second quarter following back-to-back passes over 30 yards putting them at the four-yard line. North’s senior quarterback Cameron Shannon scrambled to his right targeting the corner of the endzone and was met by a Chino Hills defender who kept Shannon from scoring with a hard hit at the one-yard line.
Shannon would not return to the game following the hit, and North would score their only points of the night on the following play on a 22-yard field goal from senior kicker Alonna Vaipulu. Though Shannon’s last play came with nine minutes remaining in the first half, his elusiveness allowed North to retain possession of the ball and keep the game close. He would finish the night completing 9-of-16 passes for 136 yards, while rushing for 20 yards on four attempts.
“That changed the dynamic of the game,” said Chino Hills head coach Keland Johnson. “He was getting away and scrambling all over the place. We didn’t contain him as much as we planned to.”
“We were already a couple of guys down,” said North head coach Vitolio Vaipulu of his offense who had injuries to two starting receivers and their starting running back.
Chino Hills’ offense began to click following the play scoring two more touchdowns in the half, both on passes from senior quarterback Favian Vasquez. They would conclude the game with 30 unanswered points with Ellison and Vasquez leading the charge on offense.
“Having those two quarterbacks — one is a really good runner in Nolan, and then Favian using his arm and legs is really helpful,” Johnson said. “I thought North’s run stoppage — they were shoving us in the run game — but the quarterback runs were very helpful tonight and just getting us a couple of first downs and tough yardage.”
Vasquez finished the night passing for 54 yards on and two touchdowns on five completions with 61 yards rushing on five attempts. Ellison completed five passes for 64 yards and rushed for 74 on seven attempts with a touchdown.
Up next for Chino Hills is Colony High School in Ontario, while North will head to Eastvale to face Roosevelt High School.
“We just need to start faster,” said Johnson. “Once we get going, we get going. It’s taking us a little too long right now to how I like it.”
