Domestic violence suspect shot, killed by officers in Menifee – Press Enterprise

A 29-year-old man wanted on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend at a Menifee home was shot and killed by police when he reached for a handgun in his waistband after attempting to force entry back into the home Friday, Nov. 17, authorities said.

Menifee officers were called to the 25000 block of Mountain Glen Circle, a cul-de-sac of single-family homes, just before 8:50 p.m., police spokesman Chase Coburn said. Callers told police a man, later identified as Freddy Robles, was assaulting his girlfriend inside the home and was armed with a handgun.

Other family members were also in the home, Coburn said.

Robles left before officers arrived, but returned a short time later, Coburn said. When he saw the officers, he sped off and police initiated a short pursuit that ended back at the house.

Robles got out of the vehicle and attempted to break into the house through the front door as officers surrounded him and gave him verbal commands, which he ignored, Coburn said. Less-than-lethal options were used, but Robles continued to try to break through the door.

The suspect then turned toward the officers and reached for a loaded handgun in the front of his waistband, Coburn said. That’s when two officers fired.

The two officers who fired were not injured and will be placed on administrative leave while the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office investigate the officer-involved shooting, the spokesman said.

The severity of injuries to the girlfriend, including whether she was hospitalized, was not known. Nor was it immediately known if police had been called to the house for any reports of domestic violence in the past.
