A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was injured Sunday, Dec. 31, when the department said a person driving a stolen car intentionally crashed into the patrol car in Wildomar, prompting the deputy to fire.
The two suspects ran away, got into a different car and drove away. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday night, although freelance videographers reported arrests in Temecula related to the shooting. Sgt. Deidre Vickers, a sheriff’s spokeswoman, said she had no information on the arrests.
The deputy suffered minor injuries, the department said. It was unclear whether the suspects were injured.
Before the shooting, the deputy had tried to pull over the car near Cervera and Prairie roads after recognizing it as stolen.
“The suspect failed to follow commands,” Vickers said. “The suspect vehicle made a U-turn and intentionally drove into the driver’s side door of the deputy’s vehicle, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The deputy’s vehicle became disabled as a result of the collision.”
The car they ran to was a silver Chevrolet Impala with a California license plate of 7WLX269.
Witnesses described the first suspect as a thin Hispanic male, approximately 5-foot-9 about 28 years old. He wore a green hat, black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. The second suspect was described as a 30-year-old Hispanic man about 5-foot-4 with a heavy build. He wore a black hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored jeans. He had red lips tattooed on his right cheek.
The department asks anyone with information on the case to call 951-955-2777.
