Those attending the 32nd Annual KROQ/FM 106.7 Almost Acoustic Christmas at Kia Forum in Inglewood on Saturday night, Dec. 9 learned a couple of very important things.
The first was that we finally found out why Los Angeles rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers had to bow out of the event so abruptly last week. Before the band’s replacement — fellow longtime KROQ act 311 — took the stage, RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis appeared on the screen, singing a song that if it had a title would probably be called “My Apologizes To You.”
“Our guitarist John Frusciante broke a finger, yes, it’s true, my apologizes to you and you and you,” Kiedis sang while looking into the camera. “We hope to see you soon not in April May or June, my apologies, apologies to you. I believe it is March 2, yes, I think it’s 2, my apologies, apologies to you. KROQ’s been rocking my whole life. Thank you very much for showing up, we’ll see you soon.”

The band agreed to play Kia Forum on March 2 for all Acoustic Christmas ticketholders. Those who purchased a ticket will receive an email from Ticketmaster with further instructions.
And kudos to 311 for pulling it together last-minute to deliver a rippin’ nine-song set of all hits including “All Mixed Up,” “Down,” “Don’t Stay Home” and “Amber.”
“It was a big scrambled to get here and we’re just so grateful to have a chance to do it,” 311 vocalist-guitarist Nick Hexum said during an interview backstage. The last time 311 played Kia Forum was a “turn of the millennium” show in 1999 with Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“It’s great to be back here, 23 years later, and sorry the Chilis couldn’t make it, but we’re going to do our best to fill in,” he said.
Kevin Weatherly, senior vice president of programming for KROQ, was certainly grateful that 311 was available to help fill a large void in such a tight-run show.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” he said to the band and went in for a group hug as the they posed for photos in the press room.
The second thing people learned on Saturday night was not to mess with Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson. She took out the trash from onstage during the band’s 30-minute set and was not happy, nor shy about voicing her displeasure with a few fans squabbling in the crowd. She stopped the music and unleashed an f-bomb laced scolding upon these fans.
“I don’t care who it is, I want it to (expletive) stop,” she said. “Do we not have enough (expletive) going on in this world (without) someone going agro at a (expletive) Christmas party?”
As whatever beef continued, Manson called upon security to peacefully sort it out since the scuffle ate into what would have been another Garbage song. The end of the scolding didn’t come without a stern warming.
“If you pull any (stuff) at our show, you’ll be (expletive) tossed out, so you’ve had one warning,” she closed with full support and cheers from the rest of the crowd before checking in to see if everyone was OK and noting that she wanted to make sure her “girls” and “boys” felt OK at a Garbage show.
In all, we still got five songs out of Garbage, though the band abandoned playing its newest song, “Wolves,” after the sound issues that followed the in-crowd shenanigans. They did blast though “Vow,” “Stupid Girl,” “Only Happy When It Rains,” “#1 Crush” and closed with the upbeat, “Push It.”
Backstage, Manson only let one curse word slip during our quick interview, but was in great spirits.
“It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that without KROQ, I don’t think we’d have the career that we actually have now,” she said. “They laid a foundation for us that was so helpful to us reaching an audience and they’ve supported us now for 30 years, so you don’t forget that kind of commitment. It’s true love.”
“There’s been a lot of ups and downs with us,” Garbage guitarist Steve Marker added. “There’s been ups and downs with the music industry, radio, all of it, and (KROQ) kept it going and we appreciate that so much. We appreciate them still having us.”
“I am so grateful that we get the opportunity to play for an audience, full stop,” Manson added. “To have had anyone ever listen to Garbage is a real (expletive) privilege.”
With RHCP off the show, Garden Grove punk band The Offspring were asked to step up to the headlining spot on Saturday night. Frontman Dexter Holland and guitarist Noodles were ready for the challenge. While they revealed that a new record is set to be out by the end of 2024, next year is also the 30th anniversary of the band’s breakthrough album, “Smash.”
“These songs are still so fun to play,” Noodles said. “They don’t seem like 30-year-old songs to us. We really do love all of the songs and whenever we’re connecting with an audience, there’s no feeling in the world like that.”
While the band joked that they were at the first KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas 813 years ago and that it was hosted “in a manger and was actually acoustic,” these guys are still so solid and blasted through a trio of songs off of “Smash” (“Bad Habit,” “Come Out and Play” and “Self Esteem”) that had everyone on their feet and yelling along. Plus they have so many other rockin’ hits, too. During “Why Don’t You Get a Job?” the band unleashed a ridiculous amount of beach balls into the venue, which audience members tossed around. There was one ball in particular that was so comically massive that I have no idea how they physically blew it up and got it down the hallways. It was ginormous enough to smash down on at least 20 fans at once in the pit and was a struggle to get boppin’ around during the song.
“That’s too many balls,” Holland said to the crowd after one had smacked his mic away mid-song sending an on-stage tech scrambling to pick it back up.
The evening was filled with a lot of good music. Canadian rock band The Beaches delivered a fun opening set with songs like “Cigarette,” “Blame Brett” and “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Paranoid.” The all-female group is sure to be one we see a lot of in 2024. British singer Bakar had the early crowd grooving to “Hell N Back” and Los Angeles natives Cannons were delightful with “Bad Dream,” “Hurricane” and “Fire for You.’ English indie rock group Lovejoy was also impressive with “Perfume,” “Normal People Things” and “The Fall.”
Get to these shows early, folks. Much like the KIIS/FM 102.7 Jingle Ball last week at Kia Forum, these openers have been absolutely epic and you’ll be sad that you missed out.
Later in the evening, super producer Jack Antonoff’s Bleachers had a high-energy set and two saxophone players on stage (because is there such thing as too much sax?) with songs like “I Wanna Get Better,” “Rollercoaster” and “Stop Making This Hurt.” Portugal. The Man had fans dancing through “Creep in a T-Shirt,” “Modern Jesus” and “Feel It Still.”
As a bonus I learned that not only will The Offspring have a new album in 2024, but Garbage and 311 have new records in the works, too.
“We’re somewhere, maybe a third, into a new album that we’re really excited about,” Garbage’s Marker said. “We’ll be finishing that up next year and we’re just hearing about touring plans. Our manager came down tonight and he’s like ‘really excited about next summer!’ That thrills us.”
311’s finishing up its new record right now.
“I think it’s a big step forward,” Hexum said. “I call it 311 on steroids because it’s just a little better of everything. It’s got really great hooks, great production, rockin’ riffs … everything people love about 311, we’re taking to a new level.”
